What we've been up to...

Seems my backyard has been a hotbed of activity lately.  First, the garden competition.  In case you'd like an update, it poured down rain and hubby's strawberry plants bounced back.  There are berries deveoping.  Meh. whatever.  MY tomato plants have fruit that is getting bigger and new flowers.  So there.
Anyway, this past weekend, this monstrosity found it's way into our back yard:

See, each year, our city hosts a world championship bbq cooking contest.  Al Roker used to come down and broadcast from Memphis every year and even had his own team one year.  So I guess it's a big deal.  For us, it's really a good reason to go downtown, drink beer and eat ribs.  Then we grew up.  And had a kid.  So now it's even MORE of a reason to go downtown, drink beer and eat ribs.  Our head cook quit this year and my sweet hubby volunteered to take over the duty.  It's a big responsibility as you're in charge of cooking bbq for three days, culminating in a presentation to the judges where you explain your process, your cooker and ultimately serve them your ribs and watch them pick the meat off and judge your babies, comparing them with 300 other competitors.  If your team wins, they get $10,000 I think.

So, when our head cook quit, he took his smoker with him and here we were, all paid up and nothing to cook in.  Hubby hopped on craigslist and found this lovely thing.  So our team bought it.  And parked it in our yard for the next 3 weeks.  I know you're jealous.

Let's talk about something fun...shopping for baby gear.  I have most of the stuff we need but I'm looking at camera systems for baby #2.  We have a Summer Infant video monitor that we love but converting to a two camera system doesn't seem to work as there's too much interference.  So, I'd like to buy a two camera system that I can monitor on the internet.  There are some sweet systems out there like this one.  It's perfect!  Except one problem...it doesn't work with a Mac and we're a purely Mac household.  As a matter of fact, I have yet to find a baby system out there that IS compatible with my snazzy computer.  Anyone else have any luck?  I'm sure I could buy various cameras, piece them together and rig up a solution but I really want an out of the box, plug and play system.  Suggestions welcome!!!!

  1. Is this featured on BBQ Pitmasters? My father in law watches that a lot (I swear, I don't watch it - I don't get near a BBQ).

As for the video monitors, our old one recently died, and I called up Safety 1st. They sent me a brand new model (for free) and it's compatible with other cameras in the house. Not sure what it's called, but it looks like an iphone. Also, have you considered just a sound one for Holden and a video for the baby?

  2. I have seen an episode or two of Pitmasters and there are people on the show who come here but I don't know if they will show our contest. I think ours is bigger than some of the one's I've seen on the show. Jacks Old South is on the roster...I think he's one of the main guys.

We actually use a separate sound monitor now because the video monitor's sound is too sensitive and I couldn't sleep. I can control the volume better with the sound monitor we have. I like looking in on my peanut and seeing him asleep with his little booty up in the air. It makes me smile. :-)
I'll look into the safety 1st...will it broadcast on the internet? I think it would be cool to look in when we aren't home from my iphone to see if the sitter gets them to bed on time, etc. I'm a dork. ha!

  3. Haha, I was wondering what you were going to do with the internet broadcast - have the laptop open bedside to monitor throughout the night?! LOL! Now it makes more sense! I'm not sure if it does internt broadcast, I will check!

Also, for this one, it has a voice activated mode, so you can set it to that for overnight so it's not nearly as sensitive as the normal video monitor (we had that problem with my old one too - it would sit on the floor under a pillow to muffle the noises). Now, it only goes off if Spencer cries outloud.
